Why I’ve made an audiobook about dyslexia

Why did we have to wait so long for the audiobook about dyslexia?

Finally, my audiobook about dyslexia is available.

Here is a teaser.

The cost of hiring a voice artist and creating the finished audio ran into thousands, so I didn’t release the audiobook at the same time as the paperback and ebook.

Ever since the launch of my book, Dyslexia. Wrestling with an Octopus, I’ve had numerous requests for an audio version, and the narrator, Naomi Barton, has done a fantastic job in bringing the book to life. I had hoped to voice it myself, but lack of technical audio skills, procrastination and perfectionism held me back. You can read my post about dyslexia and perfectionism here.

Why are audiobooks good for parents with dyslexic children?

Having a child with dyslexia makes the already exhausting task of parenting sometimes overwhelming. I struggled to find answers to help my son Harry learn to read and spell, and finding time to read books about dyslexia was nearly impossible.

Busy parents will be able to listen to this audiobook when they are driving, cooking, hanging out, washing and doing the million and one practical chores they do every week.

Dyslexia is often inherited; therefore, not all parents with dyslexic children can read. Read this blog post to learn more about the causes of dyslexia. In making this information available as an audiobook, I hope all parents will be able to access the help they need.

How can you have illustrations in an audiobook about dyslexia?

I love Sarah Pitts’s illustrations in my paperback and was worried audio readers were going to miss out. I especially wanted readers to see my dyslexia octopus illustration. It’s easier to read here.
